Question Description

How does temperature affect water availibilty in an ecosystem?

Final Answer

If the temperature is below zero degrees Celsius it will be frozen as ice and unavailable to living organisms. If the temperature is above zero degrees Celsius but below 100 degrees Celsius, then water is liquid water and available to living organisms. This is the form in which living organisms require water. It would be unusual and unlikely for the temperature to be above 100 degrees Celsius, which would cause the water to be in the form of steam. However, water does evaporate in environments where the temperature is very high. The impact of this depends on the level of precipitation. In hot deserts the temperature is so high during the day that any water would immediately evaporated and as there is no precipitation there is no water. The rates of evaporation are high in tropical rainforests but due to high levels of precipitation there is plenty of water.
