After rating myself on the leadership traits, I asked two other people where I volunteer at (two subordinates) to grade me as well. While I got mostly “strongly agree” for each category, what they all said, and I agreed with, was that my ability to communicate and empathize were my strongest traits as far as the questionnaire. What they also said, and I agreed with as well, was that my greatest strengths were not listed on the questionnaire. I believe that in addition to being a good communicator and good at developing interpersonal relationships, my integrity or work ethic, ability to influence behaviour and resolve conflict are my greatest strengths. I am currently employed as a nanny as well as volunteering for a hospice program therefore, excellent communication is imperative. Recently, I was given a little bit more involved administrative work to complete. The communication piece I believe provided me an opportunity to expand my knowledge and get my hands dirty if you would say Per Northhouse (2013), integrity is one of the five major traits of leadership. Leaders with integrity are known to be honest and authentic. Employees are inspired by leaders with integrity because they can trust them to do the right thing, and do as they say they would. The two employess that I work (volunteer with) that rated my trait questionnaire scored me at a “four” for “persistent – stays fixed on the goals, despite interference.” While this was difficult to accept, they are correct. Sometimes working in dual capacities can be challenging in remaining focused on one goal. The fact that I am very verbal about the many tasks that I perform that I shouldn’t, is a good enough reason they would give me this score. My consolation is that they rated me at a “four” and not a “one.” There have been multiple times when I have had to temporarily pause a project because of interruptions. Being the “go-to” person at my job (volunteer) opens me up for multiple interruptions on any given day. Sometimes, however, depending on the urgency of the situation, I must stop one project and focus on another, or stop one thing to put out other fires. Reference: Northouse, P. (2013).
