CASE 56: WEEKEND RACIST Angie almost deleted the e-mail. She wondered why the spam filter hadn’t caught this one since the subject line read, “ALERT: Carl is a Racist!” But then she noticed the e-mail came from another agency employee. Also, among Angie’s many other duties, she supervised the mail room and the postal clerk there. Hesitantly, she opened the e-mail and there was a note from Lisa, an African American accounting clerk in another division. It said simply: “Carl in the mail room is a racist. He is a member of a local hate group. Click on this link and you will see how he spends his weekends. Angie still wasn’t sure that this wasn’t some scam. After all, the spammers could be quite clever. But she was intrigued. Hesitantly, she connected to the link. It was a page full of thumbnail photographs. They were so small that she couldn’t quite make out any of them. So she put her cursor over one and clicked. There was Carl, the postal clerk, in full paramilitary regalia. On his right arm, he wore an armband with a Nazi swastika. In the background, he was flanked by an array of photographs of cross burnings and lynchings. From the ceiling hung three confederate flags. The other pictures were just as damning. She immediately called Carl into her office and asked him what this was all about. He said, “Excuse me Angie, but what I do on my own time is my business. We have fun and we never do anything illegal.” “I don’t think so,” Angie responded, “We must have some moral turpitude clause or something that might even get you fired.” “I wouldn’t go there.” Carl stiffened and lowered his eyes. “Every one of my performance appraisals have been superior. It would be advisable for you to drop this matter right now.” “Are you threatening me?” “I am going back to the mail room to do my job. I suggest you do the same rather than wasting your time playing on the Web.” At that Carl turned and left the room. Angie was stunned. She got up and headed down the hall to see if the agency administrator was in her office. Lisa stopped her on the way and asked, “Did you get my e-mail?” “Yes, I’m still looking into it.” “I want that bigot fired, Angie,” yelled Lisa. Several other employees peeked from around their cubicles. “We’ll see,” Angie said. She continued down the hall away from Lisa. Angie did not know what she would recommend to the administrator.

According to the case study, Carl is said to have been engaging in activities that are racists
in nature. However, this kind of activities have been happening over the weekend and not in the
workplace. Therefore, an employee is not supposed to be punished for the activities that they
undertaking outside the working environment (Fredrickson, 2015). This is however different for
public employees since they possess the image of the o...
