I believe that the dealing with the drug issue in society should involve the combination of
the two strategies. The fight against drug abuse should be incorporated alongside legalization and
regulation. The fight against drugs is key to combating the business as a whole and reducing the
accessibility of these illicit drugs. It also ensures that those above the hierarchy of the illicit drug
trade are caught and punished accordingly. Similarly, legalization and regulation have also
proven to be effective in recent years especially with evidence from the legalization of marijuana
in various states in the US. The legalization and regulation of some illicit drugs would ensure
that the black-market trading of illicit drugs is addressed and reduced significantly. Furthermore,
legalizing and regulating illicit drugs would be key in addressing the severe effects if such drugs,
because there are structures and policies, put n place to ensure proper use and thus, less
likelihood of abuse.

There are two main types of illicit drugs markets. These include the freelance model and
the business model. The business model is a model of retail drug distribution in which illicit
substances or drug transactions are carried out within a hierarchically structured organization. In
this model, the upper organizations receive supplies from the manufacturers, which are then

broken down and divided to street dealers who are known as runners. The runners are tasked
with selling the supplies into smaller amounts to the consumers. The business model involves
drugs such as heroin, cocaine, crack and among other illicit drugs. This model often operates in
an organized manner and various individuals within the organizational structures have different
powers and roles based on their position. On the other hand, the freelance model is a model of
retail drug distribution in where the dealers and buyers transact their business with significant
anonymity, outside of the structure of a large-scale drug organization. In addition, the freelance
model also involves independent individuals operating collectively. However, these independent
individuals operate without knowing the true identity of their partners. This anonymity enables
them to stay away from the risk of being exposed to either rivals or the law enforcement
authorities. Furthermore, the business model involves a cash only business and various
substances such as marijuana, methylenedioxymethamphetamine and lysergic acid diethylamide
are transacted (Levinthal, 2012).
