Data Backup and Disaster Recovery

Abstract
Threats to the progress of an organization can arise from various sources hence important to have
adequate preparation. Disaster planning and database backup are among the crucial tasks in
disaster preparedness. The IT systems require fast recovery process after a disaster since many
organizations rely on them for the daily operations. The research paper has a description of
database backup, disaster recovery planning, Good business continuity planning, the importance
of integrating them, and the impact of not executing them effectively. The research conducted
reveals that the two aspects are essential to ensure effective recovery procedures.
Database Backup
At present, the use of technological systems has become an important aspect of running
the affairs of every organization. There is a need to create and store data for use in the daily
operations. Thus, data piles up in the databases and many organizations lack efficient methods of
handling it regardless of their heavy reliance on the same data for running their affairs.
Disruptions in the form of artificial or natural disasters usually occur leaving the organizations
unable to restore or recover their data (Auberry, 2015). As such, it is essential to consider having
a backup strategy that helps to address the challenges.
In Information Technology, backup is the process of copying or archiving of computer
data for use in the restore of the original after a data loss event. The main purpose of creating the
backups is to help in recovering after a loss by deletion or corruption. Data loss is a common
occurrence for computer users. The second reason for creating backups is to help in the recovery
of data from an earlier point in time. A backup system contains at least a copy of all the data
worth saving from the database. The process of organizing the storage space and managing the

backup process is complex due to the many considerations required. However, companies can
use repository database models to give structure to the storage system. The devices used in
backups offer geographic redundancy, data security, and portability (Ozar, 2010).
The process of creating the backups requires a proper plan to enhance the efficiency of
the process. Before the database files go to the storage locations, they undergo selection,
extraction, and manipulation. Several different techniques have been developed to optimize the
backup procedure. The procedures include dealing with optimizations for dealing with open data
files and the live data sources. Others are compression, encryption, and duplication of the data.
The backup strategy requires incorporating dry runs that validate the reliability of the data under
backup. The backup strategy may face limitations from human factors hence important to
address them appropriately.
In the default settings, databases require backups every 24 hours. However, the frequency
and number of backups kept can have configurations to optimize the startups times. Database
backups can be in two different ways. The database backup files are the dumps of the application
