The lunar Maria is made up of dark, solidified lava. The highlands are more heavily cratered than the Maria, and it has a higher altitude. The Maria was formed from old volcanic activity on the moon. The lava flowed on the Maria parts and eventually solidified. The Maria is also less cratered because the lava made the surface younger.
