For the next three weeks, you should attempt to see as many of the following phases as you can: waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning crescent. You must make at least six observations. Each observation should contain the following information ( you may use the observation journal form for the lecture course): Date, time, observing location, lunar phase, viewing conditions, a sketch of the moon showing visible surface features as well as any appropriate background. (photographs are an acceptable alternative), a verbal description of the moon, and the altitude and compass heading (azimuth) at which the moon was located at the time of the observation. Format: In addition to the above include 1 - 2 pages (10 or 12 pitch type of a common font such as Times Roman or Arial, double spaced, 1 - 1.5 inch margins) with the following information: a description of the orientation of the Sun, Earth, Moon system for each of the phases listed above (whether they are observed or not), the approximate rise, set and transit times for each phase. Finally, include a brief discussion as to why we see phases. Submission Guidelines: When completed, scan and attach the sketches (preferred) and submit them together with the text description through the assignment drop box (Assignment tab). If scanning is not possible, please use the fax number in the syllabus to send your sketches to the instructor, then submit the text description through the assignment drop box.
