Create a 6-8 slide presentation (with
detailed speaker's notes) on how you
would select, foster collaboration
among, and educate a team dedicated
to solving a diversity issue.
Introduction
Assessments 1 and 2 are scenariobased, so you must complete them in
the order in which they are presented.
Finding, organizing, and motivating
teams is a key leadership skill as is the
ability to communicate and present
information.
Overview
In this assessment, you will continue

Scenario
Imagine that Lynette follows up with
you in an e-mail shortly after reading
your views on leadership and
collaboration:
Hi,
Thanks for sending me your
thoughts last week on the
diversity issue at the clinic.
Your next step is to select a
team of professionals who can
help you in this project and
prepare an introduction of the
project for a first meeting with
them.
I want you to prepare a
presentation to serve as a brief,
but substantive introduction for
the first meeting with a group
of 4–5 members who will
participate on the committee
tasked with addressing the
diversity issue. Once I review
more information about the
proposed team I can help you
with the recruitment. The
presentation should be 5–7
minutes and use 6–8 slides with
detailed speaker's notes so I
can understand your approach.
Not a lot of time or space, so
keep things pretty high level.
Do the following:
•
•
Briefly outline the project
goals and highlight 2–3
of the initial priorities to
be addressed by the
group. Also, explain why
they are important.
Explain the composition
of the team and why you
chose them. Note that
you will not know the
exact individuals yet, but
assume we will recruit
the people with the
desired qualities and
characteristics that you
outline in the
presentation. Consider
the following:
• Include a group of
professionals you
believe can help
define the problem
and ultimately
make
recommendations
on how to address
it.
•
Make sure each
member is either
trained in,
sensitive to, or has
experience with
the concept of
workplace
diversity.
•
Give some thought
to having some
members from
outside the
organization.
•
Provide member
profiles:
their diversity,
qualifications,
experience,
internal versus
external, and so
forth.
6. Explain your role and
describe how the
committee will work
together and achieve
effective
interprofessional
collaboration.
• Describe how the
group will
communicate.
How and when
they will meet.
•
Describe how
ideas will be
shared and
decisions made.
•
Describe roles,
group function,
and structure.
7. Describe the basic
characteristics of a
diverse workplace.
8. Provide a convincing
argument regarding the
benefits of a diverse
workforce using support
from current research.
Thanks,
Lynette
Instructions
Create a 6–8 slide presentation in
response to the content defined in the
above scenario and submit it in the
courseroom.
Presentation Guidelines
•
•
•
Length: 5–7 PowerPoint slides
(not including title slide) that
would accompany an
approximately 5-minute oral
presentation.
Notes: Prepare detailed
speaker's notes describing
items on each slide so that the
viewer can accurately interpret
the deeper meanings and
intentions that would have
been conveyed orally. Support
your claims, arguments, and
conclusions with credible
evidence from 2–3 current,
scholarly or professional
sources.
Visuals: Create visuals that are
easily read and interpreted. Use
colors, fonts, and formatting
and other design principles that
make the information clear and
generally add to the aesthetic of
the presentation.
Please refer to the scoring guide for
details on how your assessment will
be evaluated.

Dear Lynnette,
Thank you for appreciating my potential in solving the issues facing Lakeland Clinic.
You’re approaching me for my contributions to solving the issues ailing Lakeland Clinic shows
how good a leader you are. I have learned lots of skills from you, and this opportunity gives me
the chance to implement the skills. Also, diversity is an important issue that, unless solved
urgently, may cause further losses and make the clinic even more unattractive for the local
population that it was aimed to help (Saleh et al., 2018). Diversity issues affect collaboration and
interaction between professionals and clients, among others. Therefore, it will be important for
the leader to supervise change and motivate people to change.
Several leadership qualities may be needed to solve the issues identified. First, the leader
must be competent in solving people's needs. Among the most important issues adversely
affecting the clinic is the lack of cultural competence among the staff (Saleh et al., 2018). For a
leader to solve the issue, they must understand Haitian culture. The leader should know what is
appropriate for the people to lead appropriate cultures. If they do not understand the local
culture, the leader must be open-minded to learn. Cultural sensitivity is also very important.
Cultural sensitivity enables leaders to work with diverse people. Cultural sensitivity involves
seeing other people's practices without judging them based on one's own culture. The leader must
be a good communicator (Saleh et al., 2018). Communication may help the person connect with
employees and other parties and use feedback appropriately. A good communicator will use
appropriate channels and respect the various cultural differences in their communication.
One of the people whose leadership skills are exemplary and that I would want to
emulate if I get the opportunity to lead the required changes in Lakeland Clinic is Dr. Ernest J.
Grant. Dr. Grant is a professional nurse with over three decades of service and several awards for
his outstanding services and leadership. For instance, he was recognized for treating burns after
3
the 9/11 attacks. Dr. Grant is also the president and is therefore responsible for many
achievements by ANA. Dr. Grant has participated in advocacy against discrimination (American
Nurse Association, 2022). For instance, addressed racial discrimination during the Black Lives
Matter movement to push law enforcement to respect and protect racial minorities like the other
groups. Dr. Grant showed exceptional leadership by actively addressing discrimination issues
and treating fine and burn victims fairly.
I have several similarities with Dr. Grant. First, like him, I am a good communicator. Dr.
Grant is known for his speaking skills and how he has addressed issues like police violence. His
communication was also important in his work with the victims of the 9/11 attack. Also, like Dr.
Grant, I am initiative oriented. Leaders must be proactive and act when they need to (American
Nurse Association, 2022). Leaders need to seek to address issues when they happen. Leaders
must be able to use data to solve issues. Also, like Grant, I am competent. For instance, I am
culturally competent and sensitive, and therefore, I am likely to use wise solutions. Competence
is needed to ensure that one practices knowledge-oriented measures. Nurse leaders must be
educated to use their knowledge to solve issues.
As a project leader, one must coordinate the activities and people involved and ensure the
resources needed to cause change. Project leaders should avail information and ensure that the
information guides decision-making (Iqbal et al., 2019). In solving the issue of cultural
competence, the leader must provide resources like training and communicate with stakeholders
to enable them under4stand and avail needed resources. The use of transformation leadership
may help. In the style, the leader will be visionary and empower members to become competent
and solve the issue of patients avoiding the clinic.
4
Steps to Address the Diversity Issue
The diversity issue that affects Lakeland Medical Clinic can be solved by improving the
current staff's cultural competence and sensitivity. The leader should begin by ensuring that the
staff is knowledgeable about cultural competence. From the available data and information,
people are avoiding the clinic because they feel like the employees are not sensitive to their
cultures. Because people have already been employed, the employees should attend training to
improve their knowledge about the Haitian culture. Using transformational leadership may help
create long-lasting change. Transformational leadership involves seeking employees' potential
and enabling them to reach it (Afshari, 2021). The leader must also be competent enough to use
idealized influence to change people's attitudes and behaviors when dealing with patients. The
leader should implement the change to see it and be influenced.
Training and exposing employees to information that stimulates them intellectually may
also help them improve their dealing with patients. Intellectual stimulation leads to change that
lasts long and is therefore effective. Through the meetings and training, the staff should be
encouraged to change and seek to learn more about the cultures that they work with (Afshari,
2021). The focus should be on improving people's strengths to cause improved cultural
competence effectively. The leader must actively engage themselves in the changes they want
rather than be passive while supervising their followers.
5
Another step that must be implemented should be establishing effective communication
plans. The organization must have a communication plan that involves the various channels that
should be used for the various needs of the clinic. The patients should have a channel to air their
views and opinions. Getting feedback from patients will help improve their satisfaction by
incorporating their input into their work (Sim et al., 2021). Also, effective communication may
help reduce mistakes and disagreements that result from poor understanding.
Sincerely,
Anay Izquierdo, BSN, RN
