One number is five more than another and their sum is three less than three times the smaller.

Let the first number be A

Let the second number be B

Given,

B=A+5 .......(1)

(A+B) = 3A -3......(2) [Since, A is the smaller number and B is 5 more than A]

Substituting Equation (1) in (2)

(Adding 3 to both sides)A+ A+5 + 3 =3A

2A+8=3A

(Subtracting 2A from both sides)A=8

B=8+5=13

Hence the numbers are 8 and 13
