America’s Democracy: Your Report Card

The primary goal of your last assignment is to critically analyze the primary features of the American national government. The results of your analysis will indicate what you have learned over the last five weeks. In order to accomplish this task, it is important to critically evaluate the key facets of our American democracy.

You have been preparing for this final assignment each week by constructing a detailed outline of the Final Paper’s main points through the weekly Learning Activities. In addition, you have read the course text and course readings, reviewed videos, and researched additional material for each week’s assignments and for this paper. This week, you will put all of those outlines, readings, reviews, and research together into a one summative paper.

As we wrap up our course, reflect back on what you have learned about the key structures, systems, roles, and processes that embody our national government. Focus on the strengths and weaknesses, advantages and disadvantages, and positive and negative impacts of these aspects of our democracy. Use what you have learned so far to evaluate our national government and recommend ways to enhance what works and repair what is not working well. It is important to understand that this paperis not simply a cut and paste of your four Learning Activities. While the research you have completed can serve as a strong base it is important that you implement any comments from the instructor, as well as further expand on the material. Appropriate transitions and headings are needed to ensure a cohesive paper.

Construct a six-page paper based on the detailed outlines that you created over the last four weeks. The American Power does not lie with any individual but on the people, elections, and
the constitution. With continued support from all the branches of the government true power is
established and this way one can only claim to have absolute power in the event that they have
support from the three branches of the government, executive, legislature and the judiciary.
However, this is almost impossible as the three government branches are present to ensure that
the checks and balances are maintained ensuring that no one branch oversteps or is stronger than
the other, with this it is therefore close to impossible to obtain absolute power at any given time
or period.
Although the president is able to harness restricted power from the Executive branch of
the government, he/she still has to receive power from elections by the people which bring into
reality the actual power holders who are the electors and the people who vote for the president
(Laski, 2014). Without the power of the electors, the President is unable to garner any votes for
his term as president and is probably like to fail if he/she does not attain 270 votes of the electors
before their opponent in the respective parties that they represent.
With the constitution being the main organ that governs the interactions between the
different organs of the state, it defines the powers of each and every branch of the government
detailing the facts, separation of powers and duties that they should perform as a mandate to the
government and the general public. Federalism, on the other hand, ensures that different
government structures like the federal and national government work together to achieve a
common goal for the good of the people who live in the United States. The different government
branches also play a significant role to ensure that they only perform and act as mandated by the
constitution ensuring that their acts are legal and constitutionally acceptable (Fine & LevinWaldman, 2016). Summing up the United States Government is how important the elections are
