Older adults face a more serious risk of falling in the hospital than any other group of
patients. While most factors that increase the fall risk are because of the weaknesses of the older
patients, some factors can be controlled through environmental changes within the inpatient
setting. Falls frequently cause injuries and, in severe cases, may even cause prolonged
hospitalization or the death of patients (LeLaurin & Shorr, 2019). Depending on the patient,
people may need different help to prevent falls. For instance, older adults may need help moving
around (Cunha et al., 2019). They may also require that the floors be dry to ensure they are not
slippery. While professionals already know the measures they should take to prevent falls, the
poor implementation of preventive strategies allows frequent falls. The quality improvement
initiative will involve using a 14-item checklist to ensure nurses implement preventive measures
before handing them over after their shifts.
