The Speech of Introduction
This week you will write an outline for your speech of introduction. You are not giving the speech this week; you are only writing the outline. Below you will see the Assignment for the speech so you will understand what you are delivering in Unit 3.
In Unit 3 (Week 3), you will present your first speech. This should be a speech of introduction. Instead of introducing yourself to the class, you will introduce a person of interest related to your course of study at Kaplan. For example, a psychology student might choose Carl Jung or Eric H. Erikson, while a criminal justice major could choose Eliot Ness or J. Edgar Hoover. You will not present the whole life of the person you choose; instead focus on a key time or contribution of the individual. You should include information that would not be readily known by everybody. For example, if you talk about Oprah Winfrey, it would be unnecessary to talk about her talk show, as most are very familiar with it. You would want to think about some things that will be new for most of your audience.
For this speech you are to assume that the audience is also taking the same course of study as you here at Kaplan. For example, if you are a psychology major, then you assume you are presenting to a group of your fellow psychology majors. This will allow you to focus in on a portion of the person’s life that impacted your course of study in a significant way.
The speech should be 2:30-3:00 minutes in length. This is a short time to work with, so you will have to be selective in what you include.Your speech should be given extemporaneously (this means don’t memorize, but use the outline for notes). All sources (you must cite at least two—no encyclopedias or Wikis) must be listed on the bottom of the outline in APA style.
The Assignment for this week (Unit 2) is to create an outline you will use to deliver the Unit 3 speech.
The outline should mirror the detail and format of the template in Doc Sharing: Outline Template.doc.
Use one-inch margins on all sides of the paper.
Use a 12-point font such as Times New Roman or Arial.
Be sure to choose words carefully, spell check, and edit well.
