Joy Luck: Translating cultural concepts like Joy Luck
The concept of Joy Luck cannot be translated. Jing Woo’s mother believed that her idea
was a perfect way of relieving the hurdles of life. People need to get relieved at some point of
their life. By doing so, there will be hope to face the next challenge while at the best condition. J
Woo’s mother used to bring her to the Joy Luck occasion for her to learn so that she could
continue the trend. Her aunts tried to show Jing Woo that her mother was the best at the Joy
Luck so that she could agree to stay and continue what her mother started. The idea is to have
joy, whether there are hard situations or not. The game could not be played without her, or in
other words, incomplete. At first, Jing Woo was doubtful of Joy Luck since she saw no
difference between Jewish and Chinese mah jong (Tan 1-166).
Why Joy Luck cannot be translated
Joy Luck cannot be translated because everyone who was close to Jing Woo believed that
the idea needs to be extended to the grandchildren for future benefits. The mothers hoped that
Jing Woo would not refuse to tell her sisters about Joy Luck concept. This is because her mother
was an ideal person whose behavior needed to be emulated. The Joy Luck concept would benefit
the generation to come in some ways. First, when there are challenges around that bring sadness,
people come together and party, have fun and laugh to forget the bad memories. They can also

raise money and invest in businesses or buy shares. Also, when they come together, the
friendship grows among the people involved, just like the friendship between Jing Woo’s mother
and her aunts (Tan 1-166).
Momentum of the novel
When there is failure to translate the Joy Luck concept, then the momentum of the novel
will be affected. Jing Woo’s mothers tried their best to explain why it was so important for June
Woo to understand about the concept. June Woo was emphasized to tell her other sisters about it.
This was because it will change the generation to come by embracing the concept which will see
them live a stress free life. The idea of the novel will not be provided if translation is not well
internalized. Since Jing Woo and her aunts experienced differences in language, the ideas was
not well understood by her and this took time. The intervention of her aunts simplified the whole
idea (Tan 1-166).
Role of language in the novel
The language was a big concern to the development of the novel. It played a big role by
helping Jing Woo’s parents learn English since they moved from China and moved to the US.
There was the need to join Bible classes and choir practice to understand the language better.
This helped them to express themselves better and also for the women to understand her concept
concerning the Joy Luck. Broken English was a barrier to June Woo’s parents. Jing Woo’s aunts
feared that she grew impatient when they tried to explain something to her in Chinese or broken
English. She wanted her aunts to embrace English since it was the language in America. June
Woo had a lot to do by teaching her grandchildren not only the language but also the concept of
Joy Luck (Tan 1-166).
