A 18 kg dog is receiving fluids at a rate of 65 mL/h.  It needs a drug added to 550 mL of fluids so that it receives 3 mg/kg each hour. The drug has a strength of 4% (4g/100mL).  What volume (mL) of drug will you add?

If the dog receives 3mg/kg drug each hour, 

then in total it needs 3*18=54mg each hour.

Since the strength of the drug is 4g/100mL, 54*10^(-3)/4=13.5*10^(-3) ml is needed for 65ml fluids.

550ml/65ml*13.5*10^(-3)ml=114*10^(-3)ml=0.114ml

So 0.114 ml of drug will be needed to add to 550 ml of fluids.
