If any form of plagiarism is found within your assignment, your assignment will be penalized. f) Late submission of final project will not be entertained. Note: Plagiarism is the action or practice of taking and submitting or presenting the thoughts, writings or other work of someone else as though it is your own work. Plagiarism includes any of the following, without full and appropriate acknowledgment to the original source(s): (a) the use of the whole or part of a computer program written by another person; (b) the use, in essays or other assessable work, of the whole or part of a written work from any source including but not limited to a book, journal, newspaper article, set of lecture notes, current or past student’s work, any other person’s work, a website or database; (c) the paraphrasing of another’s work; (d) the use of musical composition, audio, visual, graphic and photographic models, (e) the use of regalia, that is objects, artifacts, costumes, models and the like Plagiarism also includes the preparation or production and submission or presentation of assignments or other work in conjunction with another person or other people when that work should be your own independent work. This remains plagiarism whether or not it is with the knowledge or consent of the other person or people. It should be noted that UMP encourages its students to talk to staff, fellow students and other people who may be able to contribute to a student’s academic work but that where independent assignment is required, submitted or presented work must be the student’s own. QUESTION Pick on an issue to be researched on by identifying a problem that needs investigation. You may focus the area of study in your own respective program i.e. Industrial Technology Management (ITM) and Project Management (PM). Please specify whether your proposal is using quantitative or qualitative approach and follow the correct outline for each approach. Your research proposal should only include the following sections: a) Title Page b) Abstract • The abstract is a 150-word summary of the proposal. A suggestion, but not required, is to use 1 sentence to summarize the Introduction, specifically the problem statement; 1-2 sentences from the literature review to justify your case; 1-3 sentences to describe your methodology and finally, 1 sentence to present your proposed statistical analysis(es). c) Introduction (recommended length: 1-2 pages) • Background of the study (motivation of study) • Problem statement • • • o Here you concisely present the problem (hole) in the research of your field. Why does your study need to be completed? Purpose of research o You want to answer the question of “So what” when someone asks why you are doing this work. How will it improve your field? Research questions Significance of the study d) Literature review (recommended length: 3-6 pages) • Begin with the most general aspects to your topic and then begin narrowing down to detailed research that supports your research questions and the need for this study. • Critically evaluate each article and how it relates to your proposed contribution to your field. • This is not just a summary of research articles without your critical evaluation and link to how this supports your research • • o For example, don’t provide a summary of the article and move on. Make sure to show a weakness or strength of the article and tie it back to your work. MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEMS

ABSTRACT
This research seeks to bring an in-depth understanding of the roles of material handling
systems in an organization, its model, advantages and disadvantages of these systems and mainly
analyzing problems faced in implementations. Recommendations on rectifying implementation
are also made. The main reason for adaptation of automated material handling systems is to
reduce the cost of production.
The material handling project as part of the overall product production project,
therefore, needs to choose solutions that add value to the whole project of a company. With the
consideration of what benefits an automated system can offer a company along with evaluating
the challenges and how they can be dealt with can lead to the successful implementation of these
automated material handling systems. Before implementation, however, factors that can affect
the functional ability of equipment must be checked.

MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEMS
INTRODUCTION
Material handling is the processes that occur throughout the distribution, warehousing,
and manufacturing. These processes include the movement, storage, protection and the control of
products and materials. To ensure that all the material handling machine in a manufacturing unit
are coordinating as a unified integrated system, system integrators and consultants offer services
for design and implementation.
Proper design systems enable organizations to improve customer service, timely
delivery of products, reduction in inventories as well as drastically reduces costs of production.
The right natural handling systems management is critical for every manufacturing company to
have regardless of the size. When handled in the best way possible these systems can bring about
a ripple effect down the line consequently enhancing efficiency in tasks and reduces costs of
production (Schmid, 2014).
The main objectives of material handling systems are to lower unit material handling
costs. It also aims at saving the time used in a manufacturing cycle by faster movements of
materials and through the reduction of distance for moving materials. The reduction of
manufacturing time leads to a reduction in work-in-progress inventory costs. These systems also
work towards achieving better working conditions and increasing safety in the movement of
materials. When these systems are implemented they produce better quality products while at the
same time avoiding damages on products through efficient handling (Huang, 2012).

MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEMS
There are several challenges that affect the implementation of these systems into a
manufacturing company. These challenges make it impossible to obtain the expected results of
the system. Some of the considerations to make when choosing the design of a material handling
system are the characteristics of manufacturing materials. These can be physical states such as
solid, liquid or gaseous form. It is also important to consider the size in designing and these
include the width, length, volume or height.
In the consideration of shapes, this would involve the shape of the product such as round or
square. Weight is also a factor to consider and it can be weight per piece or weight per volume.
When considering the conditions of products this would include hot, cold or wet conditions.
Safety risks and risks of damage are also considered and can include explosive, flammable, toxic
or fragile (Mountz, 2005).
Another category of consideration for design is in the flow rate. This is determined by
evaluating the quantity of material moved by machines such as high conveyors and Low hand
trucks. Plant layout is also another category of considerations. The best material handling
systems should be designed with equipment of large production size, with low production rate
cranes, hoists as well as industrial trucks. They should offer process variations in both processing
and products. In this variation, production rate can ...
