Description

Both our text and the video I have in included in Module 2 discuss the elements of well-designed, usable instructional texts. For this assignment, using the illustrated instructions for the IKEA 2-Drawer Desk, which I have also included in Module 2, you will revise the document by converting the visual instructions into a text that uses language to explain how to assemble the product.

Your text version should have a minimum of 1000 words. Apply the concepts discussed in in the video mentioned above and those that are discussed in Chapter 5 of our textbook (“Writing Common Engineering Documents”).

Be sure to divide the overall procedure into groups of steps, rather than presenting all the steps in a single list.

Use headings to label the groups of steps and be sure to introduce them with text.

  • Pay careful attention to the visual design of your finished communication.
  • Don’t forget that your instructions must be accurate.
  • Project specifications:
  • Title page (not numbered) with the title of the instructions, student’s name, course, date.

Single-spaced text, 12-point font.

Page numbering in the upper left corner.

  • One space before and after headings.
  • All text aligned on the left margin.
  • One-inch margins all around (i.e., top, bottom, sides).
  • All figures consecutively numbered and labeled with a title below the figure (e.g., Figure 1: Assembly of the Legs.)
  • All figures should be referred to in the text.
  • Your revised manual will be evaluated using the following criteria:
  • Does the revised manual’s introduction present an accurate and concise overview of the procedure?
  • Are the instructions divided into logical groups, clearly identified with precise headings that break up the overall process into more manageable sub-tasks?

Are the sub-groups introduced with text that identifies what element of the procedure is going to be described?

Are the individual instructions composed around active, second-person, imperative mood verbs that maintain a parallel structure?

  • Has the text been edited for style, grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors to the extent that it is acceptable for a professional document?
