1)In the United States,EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency)helps to ensure the success of onsite wastewater treatment systems through the promotion and implementation of effective decentralized wastewater management programs.

Onsite wastewater systems include a wide range of individual and cluster treatment systems that process household and commercial sewage. These systems are used in approximately 20 percent of all homes in the United States.

2) EPA regulates system discharges to surface waters under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System.p

EPA regulates disposal of sewage sludge (biosolids) and domestic septage under 40 CFR Part 503.

3)On-site wastewater disposal has the potential to introduce contaminants into ground water and subsequently, by ground-water discharge, to streams.
