Running head: ANALYSIS OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
The Affordable Care Act
There has been a lot of politics that have been observed in the health insurance, with the
current administration trying to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as
Obamacare by most people. It would be perhaps imperative to start by mentioning that the major
aim of the act was to improve health access to all Americans and to ensure that there was access
to affordable health insurance among all the economic classes of the American society.
The law was also shaped in a way that it would offer protection to the consumers and
give restrictions to the insurance organizations against abuse of their power. There is a caveat
that needs to be taken into consideration when one is analyzing the Affordable Care Act, which
though it has the aim of increasing the coverage of health in the USA, the country remains one of
the few developed nations that have been able to offer universal health to its citizens.
So, what are some of the fundamental changes that the act brought with its
implementation? One of the most profound requirements of the Affordable Care Act was that all
Americans were supposed to have an insurance cover, failure to which they would be liable to
pay the penalty. The consumer choice was also analyzed, with the consumers having the freedom
to choose the health insurances that they preferred either at the state or federal level.
There was also the tax credits and some subsidies that were put in place to help those
who attained the requirements that had been put in place to access the package that they required
for the insurance services. There was also the creation of a guarantee that all the people would
not be denied the health services, either they were in the country legally or illegally. It also
covered the patients who could have been suffering from pre-existing conditions. The law came
to eliminate the additional costs that the patients had to contend with when accessing preventive

medication such as flu and birth control services. Lastly, the age of dependents who could be
liable to use their guardians’ and parents’ cover was raised to age 26 (Rosenbaum, 2016).
When one looks at the reports that have been produced so far on the impact that the
Affordable Care Act has managed to bring for the six years that it has been in existence, one of
the major areas of focus is that it has enabled a large number of people who were otherwise
uninsured have been decreasing all the states in the USA. Among the adults, there has been
recorded a drop of about 7%, and this number was predicted to fall further unless there is a
replacement and repelling of the law as the Trump Administration has promised.
Before the implementation of the law, some critics had argued that the implementation of
the law would lead to the drop in the economic growth and in full-time employment
opportunities that would be available to the American people. There are significant research
findings that can try and reinforce this position since the issue has not gained recognition and
acceptance in equal measure from all the people.
For instance, there have been 14 million jobs that have been created in the private sector,
all in full-time employment, since the enactment of the health reform bill. At the height of the
recession, which took place in 2008, there are a staggering 5 million people who are still in
employment compared to the peak recession period,...
