Introduction
The chronic cardiac condition is a devastating illness that affects all aspects of an
individual’s life including spiritual, physical, and mental dimensions. It is a threatening and
debilitating condition that is typically associated with compromised quality of life and marked
functional limitation that affects a person as well as his or her family (Gualdani & Pegoli, 2014).
The condition is associated with other psychological impairments like anxiety, depression, and
anger. Spirituality has been hypothesized as the individual feelings and belief about life and its
meaning or a person’s divine relationship with a supreme being. Others relate spirituality to
experiences such as yoga, meditation while many perceive spirituality as religious activities such
attending the church or mosque and doing the will of their creators. Technological advance has
given us the ability to prolong life, thereby shifting the focus from the traditional caring to
technological cure-oriented model. (Gualdani & Pegoli, 2014) However, compassionate or
spiritual care has a major role in health care as it serves the spiritual, physical, social and
emotional being. This kind of care involves a physician spending moments with a patient and
sharing what is significant to them. Spirituality has been found to be vital to older adults and,
therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore similarities and differences between spirituality
and the quality of life among elders with and without chronic cardiac condition.
Among the old, being well is demonstrated by remaining stable with age while those who
are considered frail have health constraints or chronic conditions. The aspect of well-being
among the old has been supported by religion and spirituality that has positively correlated with
mental and physical health, decreased cardiac conditions, and lower mortality levels. One of the
challenges healthcare providers encounter are to support a patient suffering from chronic cardiac
disease find acceptance and meaning in the middle of the illness (Janssen-Niemeijer, Visse, Van
