Under what scenario could a consequentialist defend the act of stealing?
A consequentialist is an individual who supports good consequences in different scenarios
or situations. The individual makes the choices that lead to positive consequences. Good actions
in society result from the good consequences of making the right choices. When a consequentialist
is faced with an act of stealing, he or she may defend it. They may defend it if the outcome of the
stealing case will bring a positive effect to a majority of the whole society as compared to not
defending the stealing case. The action of stealing may result in a negative effect but the effect
may not be fatal as compared to failure to defend the act. The consequentialist focuses on the
results of any situation but does not mind much on the action done (Kershnar, 2019). There is an
example whereby a mother was sick and the son did not have any cash to purchase medicine.
Therefore the son went ahead to steal the medicine from a pharmacy. Looking at such a scenario,
one should not support the act of stealing because stealing should be stooped by all means.
Anyway, if the son failed to steal the medicine, his mother would have probably died. Therefore
the son stole to save the life of his mother or improve the situation his mother was in. Ethically, a
consequentialist believes that the son did the right thing as he saved the life of his mother.
Consequentialists believe that the end justifies the means and therefore the action does not matter
much as compared to the result. If the result was to bring on board positive results,
consequentialists believe that it’s ethically right. Therefore such a scenario calls for the
consequentialist to defend the act of stealing. Anyway, if the stealing resulted in the breaking of
the law, no one is exempted from facing the consequences of the law. It is only that in the minds
of the consequentialist, they believe that the individual did the right thing and therefore needs to
be forgiven.
