The Affordable Health Care Act
The Affordable Health Care Act is a law enacted in 2010 to comprehensively reform the
health care sector (Sommers et al., 2013). There are different terms used to refer to the Act such
as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Patient Protection Affordable Care Act (PPACA), and
Obama care. The study will use these terms interchangeably to refer to the Act. On the other
hand, healthcare reform bill is the provisions of the amendments in the provision of health care
services that seeks to repeal the current regulations in order to improve the quality of healthcare
services. For example, the American Health Care Reform Act of 2017 that amends the PPACA
and Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.
In the year 2010 month of March the former US president, Barrack Obama signed the
Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA) into law after approval by the Senate by a majority of 219
votes. However, before its enactment, the bill received opposition from the entire Republicans
and some 34 Democrats who voted against its implementation. Many changes were made to the
Act before it became fully operational. However, in June 2012, the Supreme Court ruled in favor
of the Act hence upholding the majority of the provisions in the law which apply to the present.
The current president, Donald Trump, and his administration, however, are against the law hence
the repeal to introduce the American Health Care Reform Act of 2017 which will be operational
in early January next year. The intention of the changes is to restore the provisions that were
repealed under the PPACA.



The enactment of the Obama care led to the alteration of the status quo and operations of
the state and organizations. There were timelines within which organizations and citizens had to
comply with the law. For example, February 10th 2014 was the deadline for employers with at
least 50 workers has to ensure the employees have a health insurance cover to avoid paying
penalties. In 2013 October 6th, the time required by the government for the majority of the
American citizens to have health insurance cover is increased from February 15th to March 31st
to avoid payment of fines. The sign-up period to get cover in 2015 was November 2015
(Goldstein, 2014).
