Week 4 discussion 2
Individuals response
According to the ACLU “Racial Profiling refers to the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin” (ACLU 2005). The effect that racial profiling can have on the political game as well as the public is severe. Take the NYPD policy of stop and frisk. In which the police officers’ conduct this practice by first stopping then questioning then frisking; this is commonly referred to as a Terry stop in other parts of the country. However since the NYPD has adopted this practice statistics have shown the majority of stops where conducted on minorities. This has the public in outrage along with the NYCLU and ACLU. Due to such negative attention and political pressure the policy has since been abandoned.
When it comes to racial profiling and criminal profiling the distinct line between the two is often shaded by outside groups who are usually one a one track mind, who look for any negative actions by police then understanding all the elements. Criminal profiling, generally, as practiced by police, is the reliance on a group of characteristics they believe to be associated with crime. Criminal profiling is an essential tool gained through experience and time. For example one who works drug interdiction on our nation’s highways would educate themselves on the behaviors and characteristics on drug runners. Can race or ethnicity play a role in criminal profiling yes however it is not by any means the entirety of the profiling conducted by law enforcement. The concerns I fell the ACLU has to profiling is keeping the integrity in check, mainly because this nation has a negative past in dealing with minorities of all types. Either the Irish of the late 1800’s of the Mexican on this time, and everyone in between.
