One of the most difficult tasks that leaders can face is initiating organizational change. As a leader, you need to be sensitive to the ever-changing internal climate and external environment. For example, changes in the market, products, and competition may all be factors that lead to a need for change. Applying organizational development (OD) techniques to management problems is an essential skill because the primary task of leadership is to manage change; however, before a change can be implemented, the organization must anticipate the need.

To date, the executive team has been reactive to the situations affecting their department and is unfamiliar with a systems approach to OD. Based on what you already know about the climate and external factors affecting Heavy WorX, what conditions or organizational needs exist that may provide the impetus for a large-scale organizational development or planned change program?

Organizational Change

Organizational Change
As the popular phrase goes, change is inevitable and you cannot avoid it. Organizational
change entails all processes of reviewing, modifying management structures and business
processes. The ability of an organization to embrace change is such a juicy requirement for
attaining a unique competitive advantage in the highly competitive industry (Patrick, 2010 page
207). There are various drivers that can make a company to develop effective mechanisms of
initiating change within the organization. Such drivers include but not limited to: new
technological inventions, a competitive environment, varying consumer conditions, government
policies regulating business enterprises, corporate conditions and consumer demands. For
example streamlined business models such as outsourcing and other forms of constructive
interactions will be highly attained by implementation of high speed channels of

and the level of technology may force an organization to execute change mechanisms in order to
comply with such requirements (Patrick, 2010 page 208).
Models of Organizational Change

ensuring that an organization is able to deal with internal and external issues that might be either

hard to implement organizational change; due to resistance from organizational stakeholders
such as employees and shareholders. However, despite the fact of such compromising prevailing

Therefore, situational leadership skills play a cardinal role in ensuring that organizational
change has been implemented in the right manner. There are three major stages that should be
considered during the process of executing change (establishment of the need for organizational
change, implementation and monitoring). For example, the executive division of the organization
may anticipate where the company is likely to be after seven years. In order to realize such
dreams, various changes are necessary such as merging business units, reducing the number of
management layers, restructuring internal management, reducing the number of employees who
are deemed unnecessary and giving more powers to the managers for proper decision making
process (Rune, 2007 page 375).
OD Principles and Steps
Organizational Development (OD) refers to the virtual overhaul of the way an
organization conducts its activities in order to enhance effectiveness in all angles of its business
