LAB REPORT
Purpose
The purpose of the lab is to determine whether the groundwater sustainability will be
affected if the human development does not change.
Introduction
Groundwater is an important component of the water resources that human beings depend
on for survival. About twenty-five percent of the fresh water contained on the earth is stored as
groundwater. Human activities over the periods have led to changes in the levels and the
composition of the groundwater. (Adelana, 2008). Urbanization, agricultural practices, resource
mining and the growth of population are the leading threats from human beings to groundwater.
Population growth over the last few centuries has resulted in the reduction of forest covers as
people have cut down trees to pave way for the construction of cities, housing and for them to be
able to engage in food production activities like farming.
Hypothesis/Predicted Outcome
Ground water sustainability will reduce as the human population and industrial
development continues to rise.
Methods
Six parameters were studied across three periods or centuries; 1800, 1900 and 2000. Data
from the forest cover, ground water levels, salt water intrusion, farm sizes, industrial
development and the population between the three centuries was collected and analyzed against
each other. The data to be used was collected through case studies, observation and through
relevant interviews.

Results/Outcome
From the data analysis that was carried out from the three centuries, it can be reported
that in the 1800’s there was larger forest cover than the rest of the centuries. The lev...
