Assignment 2: Written Assignment (Reaction Paper - Self Help Meeting) - 15%
• The student will attend a traditional 12-step meeting or other non-traditional self-help
arena. Please do not attend a group that is led by a professional facilitator. One
place to locate 12-step meetings is by looking on the Internet. Papers where only a
video of a meeting is watched will not be accepted.
• Be sure to attend an OPEN meeting where visitors are welcome. Those who are
able to honestly identify as having been in the process of addiction are welcome to
go to a CLOSED meeting.
• Provide a brief history and current context of your area of interest, using professional/academic literature and/or official websites. (The PowerPoint
stack, Changing Focus: The Right to Treatment of Serious Mental Illness, can be used, as well as the references listed on the last slide.)
• Explain how you suggest to successfully implement each value/bullet point under the Focus Area. List each bullet point as a separate heading.

• Briefly share your final thoughts about what you have learned in this research.
Try to go alone. If you do find the need to carpool, do not sit in the meeting with your
friend. Be aware of how you are feeling, your thoughts, and the dynamics of the
group. Please do not take notes or write during the meeting as anonymity is a strong
value within self-help meetings and is adhered to by participants.
• Compare at least 5 academic references and class content to your experience and
throughout the paper to make academic sense of your observations. The student will write a 5-page (not counting cover and reference pages) (or more if
needed) paper that addresses the following issues. PLEASE USE ALL HEADINGS AS
LISTED BELOW.
•
1) Briefly describe the meeting, including location, time of day, and composition
of the group (including sociocultural aspects such as gender, class, race, etc.) 2) Describe a story that was told at the meeting. Organize the story with all the
headings of the Jelinek chart, using both the downward spiral and the process of
recovery. (Sometimes people are not comprehensive about all the stages. It is up
to you to meet this requirement. Sometimes people talk with the person
afterwards. Sometimes people make up the missing parts.) Explain the hallmarks
of each phase and support your explanation with academic information. 3) From a theoretical point of view, how do the 12 steps communities work as a
therapeutic modality? 4) In a paragraph or three, describe your personal experience of the meeting.
What dynamics resonated with you? What dynamics discouraged you? What is
your personal opinion about the usefulness of 12 step groups for people with
addictions? And give a rationale for your opinion. Please use following references:Required Textbooks

ASSIGNMENT 2
SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND
SOCIAL INTERACTION Due Week 6: 110 points
You’ve learned how important groups, roles, statuses, and social
networks are in the structure of society. In this assignment, you’ll
demonstrate what you’ve learned by identifying and describing
examples from your own life. You will also have a chance
to practice some smart strategies for managing your digital
presence in your own “online” social networks. Instructions: Complete both parts of the assignment by following
the instructions below.
PART A: YOUR STATUS SET, ROLES, AND ROLE PROBLEMS
1) Status Set:
a) List a status set that includes at least five
statuses that you currently have.
• Remember: A status is simply a position you
fill in society. It may be a job title, but it could
also include a position you fill within a family
or a community. For more information,
review Section 4.3 in your webtext.
2
b) Label each status in your status set as ascribed,
achieved, or master.
• Remember: An ascribed status is one you’re
born with and have no control over. An
achieved status is reached through your own
efforts or simply good or bad luck. A master
status is so important that it overrides your
other statuses. For more information, review
Section 4.3 in your webtext.
2) Roles:
a) Choose one status from your status set.
b) Describe the role that is associated with the
status.
c) Describe how you learned that role.
• Remember: A role is the behavior expected
of someone with a certain status. For more
information, review Section 4.4 in your
webtext.
3) Role Conflict:
a) Choose two statuses from your status set.
b) Describe a time when you experienced a conflict
because of the demands of your two different
roles associated with those statuses.
c) List at least two different ways you could have
resolved the conflict. For example, could you
ask someone for help? Or could you go online to
research a possible solution?
d) Describe the approach you took to resolve the
conflict. What was the result? Would you do
things differently next time?
3
PART B: SOCIAL NETWORKS AND POSITIVE IMPRESSIONS
1) Social Networks:
A social network includes all of the relationships that
link you to other people and groups. Through social
networks, you can connect with people who may be
able to offer you valuable advice, introductions, or opportunities.
a) Identify an area of interest that you would like
to pursue, either professionally or personally. It
could be a job or industry, a volunteer position, or
a social group.
• Examples: accounting, volunteering with the
elderly, joining a book club
b) Identify and describe three people in your social
network (people you know personally) who
have a connection, or might know someone
connected to your area of interest. These three
people may be work colleagues, family members,
or close friends.
• Remember: For privacy reasons, do not list
their names in this assignment. Instead,
identify them as Person A, B, and C.
c) For each person, write a brief description of why
you selected them, and how they are connected
to your area of interest.
d) Identify the person who you think is the best
contact for you to communicate with about
your area of interest. Why did you choose that
person?
4
2) Positive Impressions:
When you interact with other people in your social
networks, you usually want to make a positive
impression on them. Online, you can do that by using
certain strategies when you create profiles.
a) Read this beginner’s guide to using LinkedIn, a
professional social network:
http://www.opencolleges.edu.au/
blog/2016/11/07/ca-beginners-guide-to-linkedin/
b) Imagine that you are creating an online profile
on a professional social networking site, such
as LinkedIn. The first person who will see your
profile is the person in your social network that
you identified above. Write a detailed description
of the type of impression you would want to
create with your profile.
c) Identify five components of a professional
networking profile that others will use to get an
impression of who you are.
d) Create a headline for your professional
networking profile that targets the job,
opportunity, or industry you’re interested in. (See
“Headline” section of article above). Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
• Use Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch
margins on all sides.
• Use section headers (Status Set, Roles, Role Conflict,
Social Networks, and Positive Impressions) and write
left indented paragraphs under each corresponding
section.
• References are not required for this assignment as you
will use the assigned article and your webtext.
5
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment,
the student’s name, the professor’s name, the
course title, and the date.

MGT 501 SCAD Sociopolitical Skills to Effectively Lead Others Discussion
Discussion: Sociopolitical Skills"U.S. Africa Command C4ISR Senior LeadersConference, Vicenza, Italy, February 2011"by US Army Africa is licensed under CC BY 2.0Assignment Expectations:In this Discussion, you should respond with substantial detail to this topic early in the first week of the module. This will be your "initial post." For your initial post also bring in information from at least two background sources. You are also encouraged (but not required) to include a source or two from your own research to help inform your classmates. Cite the sources. The initial post should be about 250 words.Discussion posts will be assessed according to the following criteria found on the discussion rubric:Quality of initial posting (first post): Initial posting reveals a clear understanding of all aspects of the treated discussion question; uses factual and relevant information; and demonstrates full development of concepts.Quality of responses to classmates: Responds to the required number of students and to the professor, if appropriate. Demonstrates analysis of others' posts; extends meaningful discussions by building on previous peer posts; and offers alternative perspectives.Reference to supporting readings/information literacy: Refers to and properly cites either course and/or outside sources in posts, as required.Critical thinking: Demonstrates mastery conceptualizing the problem; viewpoints and assumptions of experts are analyzed, synthesized, and evaluated; and conclusions are logically presented with appropriate rationale.Timeliness: Initial post occurs in a timely manner (1-3 days into module) allowing ample time for classmates to respond and engage. Posting early allows for more opportunities for leading the discussions, making substantial contributions, and engaging in meaningful and mutual discussions with others. It also is the best chance for the highest grade in the discussion. Background for Discussion 4:Organizational structure, norms, values, culture, etc., all have an impact on a leader’s success. Consider the new or advancing leader. Such a leader is expected to learn how to effectively perform all the important administrative and professional/technical tasks. In addition, the leader needs to master the necessary social skills associated with early effectiveness in the new position. Below are 10 “sociopolitical” categories which may influence a transitioning leader's early (and enduring) effectiveness. These include, in no particular order, the ability to:enter into an established leader/employee “network”;sense, as well as use, appropriate communication and influence behaviors;sense and appropriately act on keen organizational norms;become aware of, and sensitively interact with, organizational “blockers” and “enablers”;build political bridges by identifying and relating to key formal/informal power sources;become known as a “go-to/can-do” individual;be perceived as a “team player”;sense key organizational issues upon which to create early vision, initiatives, and value;identify and appropriately respond to the requirements of superiors/peers/subordinates; andbe perceived as having organizationally appropriate ethics, values, and beliefs. Please note that these are behavioral skill categories, not actual behaviors. You likely use many of the actual behaviors (such as “interpersonal communication”) within a category every day.Discussion QuestionDoes this list of “sociopolitical” skill categories match your sense of what is most required to help ensure a leader's early success in a new role/position? What might you add or subtract to help ensure the most effective transition into a new job?In your view, how important to your enduring success in the job are your early efforts in a new leadership role? Presuming you already have practiced some or all of the 10 items, how did you learn to do so?
