5S is a manufacturing approach premised on the Toyota Production System. The
manufacturing approach is based on a philosophical mantra that states, "A place for everything,
and everything in its place." 5S is an acronym that stands for sort, straighten, shine, standardize,
and sustain (Thurston & Ulmer, 2016). This philosophical framework is the foundation of the
lean production system that seeks to streamline production, eliminate waste, and optimize
efficiencies across the organizational spectrum. Organizations that have embraced the 5S
approach have shown their commitment to organizational safety and production efficiency
(Rewers et al., 2016). More importantly, the organization stands a chance to benefit in several
major ways that will form the basis of this article.
Firstly, the lean manufacturing system enhances employee morale. The successful
implementation of the 5S approach empowers employees to take various roles in the quality
improvements process (Thurston & Ulmer, 2016). The ultimate goal is an improve morale as the
employee engages in vital aspects that determine the organization's performance. High morale is
associated with increased performance and reduced absenteeism.
The second aspect associated with the lean manufacturing system is employee safety. At
the heart of the lean manufacturing process is eliminating waste in the organizations. Wastes
include toxic materials that can expose the employee to numerous accidents and illnesses in the
