Various key factors have been identified as the cause of the World War I and World War
II between 1914 and 1945. According to Hallock (2013), one of the major factors that led to this
unprecedented period of global warfare is alliances. The original creation of the European
structure of alliances is recognized in the alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary. This
collaboration was effected in 1879 and the two nations formed a partnership. Various alliances
were later effected between various countries between 1879 and 1914. The central aim of the
alliances was based on the ability to create a collective defense in the event of a major threat to
one or more of its cosigning allies. Subsequently, this mechanism of snaring partnerships
eventually tied several nations in Europe collectively. France, Russia, and Britain created the
Triple Alliance that directed Germany and Austria-Hungary (Hallock, 2013).
Imperialism was also another major factor that contributed to this massive period of
global warfare. The late 19th and early 20th century experienced a massive increase in global
industry and empire. The expansion of industrialization in the wealthiest nations created a need
for new and extended markets. Hallock (2013) highlights that colonies created opportunities to
expand and raise the wealth of the European power as well as offering foreign markets for the
European products. As a result, industrialized nations rivaled against each other for a competitive
edge through regulating the trade of foreign resources, territories, and markets. For instance, the
impact of the British Empire went beyond five continents comprising massive territories in
Africa and India. Other European powers such as the French similarly claimed massive
territories during the Scramble for Africa. These events triggered increased tension with the

Germans, who had joined the fight to obtain colonies past time and merely controlled tiny
portions (Hallock, 2013).
Militarism is another key factor that combined with the aforementioned factors to create
the unparalleled period of worldwide warfare. The arms race in Europe precluded this warfare
chiefly due to risen economic pressure and the largely expanding European divide. Global
leaders perceived Germany as the classical military unity and proficiency based on their
substantial reserves, global mobilization and in-depth planning. As a result, the other world
