Overcoming Resistance to Change at Heavy WorX
Some employees lack the will to change, which is one factor that leads to resistance to
organizational change. However, this is not the main factor that generates most resistance from
the individuals and teams. According to Bateh, Castaneda, and Farah (2013) most resistance is
ignited by an organization’s tendency to break its promises, or low trust and job security.
Organizations that do not prove to the employees that they care cause more resistance ((Bateh,
Castaneda, and Farah, 2013, pp. 103). At Heavy Works Incorporated, the company reduced its
labour force by a whopping 43% just recently, a case that can cause great resistance. There are
several resistances that are expected from individuals and teams. However, the organization
should have a strategy of averting this resistance into collaboration as soon as possible.
Expected resistance to change
Individuals are expected to show two types of resistance; ideological resistance, and blind
resistance. As aforementioned, there are employees who have no reason to resist organizational
changes, but they will still do. This termed as blind resistance. Moreover, Heavy WorX might
have other lower level individuals who might see the change model as a model that does not suit
their idea of best practice. This can cause a type of resistance termed as ideological resistance.
Teams might also experience blind and ideological resistance because they bring out the
combined reasoning of all the participation individual players. The organization as a whole is
expected to ignite political resistance. This is a resistance characterized by attack of the person
implementing and the authorities consenting. The whole organization might see the change
management as a misuse of power, give that Heavy WorX never had the change management
department before.
