In this case a man aged 60 years old whom am going to refer as Mr. Clarkson was
brought to a health care institution to the emergency wing. A chest radiograph was taken for the
patient and it was found that there was prevalence of consolidation within the right lower lobe.
Some medical history obtained from the patients file indicated that he had been found to be
underweight. Prior diagnoses indicated that the patient had bone and brain metastases and he
was also at the final stages of prostate cancer. The patient slowly went unconscious and could
not give any response when put through a verbal stimuli. Mr. Clarkson had expressed the
suicidal thoughts to prior physicians and had earlier indicated to the doctor at the emergency
department that he should not be kept on life support rather he should be left put through
euthanasia. The doctor placed the patient on life support and based on this situation, the doctor
had to call the daughter of the patient who was the only child of the victim. When he found that
the daughter could not be reached he left her a message and telephoned some of the friends of
Mr. Clarkson who came to visit him at the hospital. The daughter acted as the surrogate who was
used to make the final decision. The case illustrates some of the legal and ethical issues in patient
care.
