Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol SIOP is a strategy used by instructors to make
subject concepts comprehensible for learners still developing English language skills. Even though
the SIOP stratagem was initially designed to assist the English Language Learners ELL master
English language content, the strategy has proved useful to all learners. However, it is crucial to
have clear content and language objectives to avoid failing to learn what ought to be taught.
Additionally, the language and content objectives should be observable and measurable to
ascertain that learners are actively working towards the objectives and to assess whether they are
making progress towards the tasks goals (Echevaria, Vogt, & Short, 2015, p. 3). It is imperative to
focus on the eight component of SIOP and their implications for teaching.
In lesson preparation, instructors introduce and state content objectives and language objectives
drawn from national standards and language arts standards respectively. In addition to this, they
are tasked with initiating rational activities that will help attain the content goals (Hanson &
Filibert, 2006, p. 12). It is worth to post the objectives for clarity so that both teachers and students
focus on the ultimate goal.
Building knowledge involves instructors connecting learners’ background and experience with
new learning. These assists learners in comprehending vocabulary which is crucial in
understanding the content. Instructors stress the importance of teaching vocabulary indispensable
to understanding the content (Hanson & Filibert, 2006, p. 13). Development of vocabulary is
critical for English student as there exists a strong rapport between vocabulary knowledge and
