Introduction
The paper aims at evaluating a phenomenological study by Crim, (2013) in the article, A
Phenomenological Study of Stress and Burnout Experienced by Licensed Alcohol and Drug
Counselors. Major parts of the study include the research problem, literature review, purpose
statement, research design and questions, data collection plan and lastly, data collection and
analysis plans.
Research problem
Crim’s personal experience informed the author's interest in stress management for
professional counselors. In the introduction part, the author documents how stress compromised
or nearly compromised his profession. The author, an experienced Licensed Alcohol and Drug
Counselor (LADC), is concerned about the effects of stress in the ‘helping profession’ notably
addiction counseling profession. He notes that employees in the ‘helping profession’ often suffer
stress and burnouts due their work environment which is characterized by over involvement in
emotionally demanding situations and engaging excessively in direct contact with people and
their problems. For this reason, the counseling professionals often suffer emotional exhaustion
causing them to disengage from the people they serve. The author, therefore, sets out to conduct
the study to help the counseling professionals manage their stress to be efficient in their work.
Being the reason why the research is carried out, the research problem is the research driver. The
author through sufficient review of the literature and personal experience understands the
problem wholly.
