Outsourcing MNC Outsourcing MNC Part Two Mytyia Alleyne Fundamentals Global Management February 20th, 2015 Professor Cheryl Toops 1 Outsourcing MNC 2 Entry and Implementation Strategy Manage Both Multiculturalism and Diversity In India the culture is vastly different than that of America but despite distinct cultural differences there are many benefits to outsourcing the IT, shipping, and warehousing departments. For one a large majority of citizens speak English simplifying communications and improving global business practices. India has a stable government and a strong economy. According to the National Outsourcing Association (NOA), India is a preferred country for outsourcing for the talent, price reduction, and lack of complicated infrastructure. The country has millions of college graduate providing talented workers at lower, more flexible prices than the American graduate. India has state-of-the-art telecom communication centers and ISP and cellular capabilities (Mielach, 2013). This is essential to the success of American Home Technology in the new global market. The country is one of the most popular global locations for doing business because they support advancements in technology and MNC’s with the quickest time to market. The 12 hours time difference allows the American company to continue to operate when the business world is shut down in America. India is considered a leader in global business due to higher productivity, higher quality product, and product efficiency. America has established a diverse market place but India has a unique culture that is different from the culture found in America. In this country there are several religions that play a significant role in how society operates. The majority religions in India are Hinduism and Buddhism with a small percentage of people Christian and Muslim. In India there is a caste Outsourcing MNC 3 system with higher and lower castes. In this country a person cannot change caste in their lifetime. They are born into the caste. When doing business in India it is important to understand the caste system and the expected etiquette. In India people greet with a Namaste or a handshake (Hofstede's, 2009). Punctuality is a sign of respect in India and the negotiation is an important aspect of the business relationship. American Home Technology must manage both multiculturalism and diversity in order to build an effective multicultural team. Team members doing business in India must learn the country and become familiar with the proper etiquette and traditions for conducting business. Team members will need to complete diversity training which includes learning about the Indian culture and important cultural differences. Four Basic Strategies for Global Integration The four basic strategies for global integration include the international strategy which is to sell a service or a product in a global market. The international strategy will allow American Home Technology access to a large portion of the international market which will give them an economic advantage over the competitor. Applying an international strategy will lower costs for doing business in the global market and will access to cheaper labor. With an increased market size American Home Technology has access to more consumers as well as the demand for their product will be increased. Another strategy for global integration is multi-domestic strategy. The multi-domestic strategy involves employing members of the local, global community when conducting business (Ghemawat, 2007). This means using local productions services, marketing, warehousing, and shipping services to conduct business. When employing the multi-domestic approach products Outsourcing MNC 4 can be customized to meet specific needs and preferences of American Home Tech in order to attract local consumers. The satellite services provided by AHT can be provided to the local community due to the high number of citizens that speak English. The global strategy refers to an approach where the business will conduct business in the global market. In this approach the product is globally branded. Applying this approach allows the company to establish a centralized location in which to conduct business. Lastly is the transnational strategy. In the transnational strategy involves both the global and local response to conducting business what this means is a shared vision is created between the company and the global market and support individual commitment (Ghemawat, 2007). The transnational strategy combines the multi-domestic strategy and the global strategy to market a global product and create a global brand. The goals of American Home Tech are to expand the market in which they sell their satellite service. Because the satellite service can offer citizens of other countries American satellite programming with alternative languages the company can successfully expand to a global market. When the company operates in the chosen market of India they will conduct business locally requiring a multi-domestic response but due to their plans of AHT to expand into other markets they will need to create a solid global brand. As a result the transnational strategy would be most beneficial to American Home Technology. Environmental Scanning There are several methods that can be used to conduct an environmental scan in the business environment with the SWOT analysis being the most popular. The SWOT analysis begins with the strengths of doing business in India. One of the strengths of doing business in India is the fact that a large portion of citizens speak English making them an asset for Outsourcing MNC 5 communication. This means there will not be a concern for misunderstanding or the need to hire staff that can interpret. Next a large portion of the population is highly educated allowing for a large pool of attractive candidates and the country provides these attractive candidates at a lower more flexible price. The country also offers a stable economy and stable government. Identifying the weakness of doing business in India is another part of the environmental scan. The weaknesses associated with doing business in India are the ability to get in contact with the right people in order to get permission to do business. Because of the Indian culture it is important to know someone that can help circumvent the difficult entry process. Next while the country highly trained workers the initial cost of starting business in India can be high. The company must go through 12 different complicated procedures before they can get permission to do business in India. Next in the analysis are the opportunities. The opportunities provided by the country of India are endless. The business can operate at well lower costs than those they will pay in the United States and the country provides a central location for doing business in the West and the Middle East. India has state-of-the-art telecom communication centers and ISP and cellular capabilities (Mielach, 2013). This offers major advantages to companies that employ technological advancements to conduct business like American Home Technology. India labor has the quickest time to market and can improve the productivity and efficiency of the business. While doing business in India has many benefits there are some threats to the American business. For one citizen in America frown on countries that take their labor and services to other countries to get a lowered price. This can result in a loss of American customers. Another threat involves the taxes that must be paid in India. These taxes include central sales tax, dividend tax, Outsourcing MNC 6 property tax, fuel tax, vehicle tax, VAT and excise duty (TMF, 2015). These taxes can threaten the profitability of American Home Technology. Political Risk Analysis The political risk analysis examines any economic or political issues that could threaten the ability of AHT to do business. In India bribes are a normal part of doing business. The business entering the foreign market must be ready to grease some palms in order to get the steps completed to conduct business in the country. This bribery has led to corruption in the government and the threat of financial frauds. A lack of ethical guidance in business can lead to all types of unethical behaviors. Frauds and scandals can damage the reputation of AHT which could threaten their profitability and ability to effectively conduct business. In India there are constant issues with different civil groups rising up to protest their treatment. For one women in India are poorly treated which creates anger and unrest. The complicated caste system also supports unrest in the country because lower castes are unfairly treated. Crime is also on the rise in the country creating difficulty or foreign businesses to safely send in global teams to conduct business. Cyber security risks can be a major threat to any business and the country. While India provides advancements in technology political unrest creates risks to cyber security. The biggest threat to the foreign organization operating in India is the protection laws afforded to the employee. These include the Payment of Wages Act of 1936, the Industrial Employment Act of 1946, the Industrial Disputes Act of 1947, the Payment of Bonus Act of 1965 and the 1972 Payment of Gratuity (TMF, 2015). These acts protect the Indian citizen ensuring they receive gratuities and bonuses that must be applied every 15 days. This can be a complicated system. The 1986 Consumer Protection Act provides protections to the consumer. if Outsourcing MNC 7 a foreign company provides a poor product or risk safety of consumer they can be forbidden from doing business n the country. Implementation Strategy In order to begin to conduct business in India which will include outsourcing the IT, shipping, and warehousing departments, a step by step implementation strategy is required. Creating a partnership with India begins with research and planning. The company y will conduct research into the country, the culture, and operational structure. This research will be used to conduct a strategy to be successful in doing business in this country. This will begin with going through the complicated steps to establish an alliance partnership with the country including following all rules and regulations and paying the appropriate officials. Next a team will be trained to enter the country and identify and establish the locations that will be responsible for the outsourcing of the IT, shipping, and warehousing departments. This team will be responsible for obtaining appropriate permits and following the regulations established by India. This will require support of a liaison from India. Once the locations are established labor will be hired using the appropriate employment agencies and adhering to Indian law. The most significant challenge will be in establishing the business in India so it will be important to identify individuals that can help expedite the process. While in America bribes are illegal the company must be willing to adhere to the rules and cultural differences of the country. These differences in culture can create difficulties in entering the foreign market. If the entry steps are carefully followed and the laws of India adhered to once the outsourcing begins, American home Technology can enjoy a successful partnership with the country like many other global countries from across the world. There are Outsourcing MNC some challenges to doing business with India but because the country has engaged in global relationships with the West for hundreds of years companies can find great success.
