we know cos (2x) = cos^2(x) - sin^2(x)

so, [cos(2x) + sin^2(x)]/cos(x)
=[cos^2(x) - sin^2(x) + sin^2(x)]/cos(x)
=cos^2(x)/cos(x)
=cos(x) is the answer.
