Question Description

Of all murder victoms in 2010 whose relation to the offender was known, 28.8% were killed by a family member and 53% by an acquaintance. The rest were killed by a stranger. What is the probability that a randomly selected murder victom was killed by a stranger?

Final Answer

We have used basic rule of conditional probability

P(A)=family member=28.8%=0.288

P(B)=acquaintance=53%=0.53

P(AUB)=P(A)+P(B)=0.288+0.53=0.818

probability of murder killed by stranger=1-P(AUB)

probability of murder killed by stranger=1-0.818

Probability of murder killed by stranger=0.182
