Part 1: Examining narrative
The Great Gatsby is a film that dwells on the life of a millionaire called Jay Gatsby. It recounts
the encounter of his neighbor, Nick Carraway, with him during the twentieth century. The movie
begins when Nick is in a psychiatric hospital where he narrates of this great man he knew. Nick’s
passion is writing hence when his doctor advised him to write on Jay Gatsby he takes up the
challenge and writes “The Great Gatsby.” Nick rented a mansion next to Gatsby who used to
hold huge parties. One-day Nick got an invitation to Gatsby’s party where he got to meet Gatsby
and his business partner. Gatsby tells Nick that he went to Oxford and that he is a wealthy war
hero. His friend Jordan tells Nick that Gatsby once had a relationship with Daisy who happens to
be Nick’s cousin.
Daisy is married to Tom, but after an awkward reunion with Gatsby they start having an affair
and plan to elope. Tom also has an affair with a woman called Myrtle who is married to George.
Gatsby informs Tom of his affair with Daisy at the plaza hotel whereby Tom confronts him and
accuses him of not attending Oxford university hence he is a fraud. While Daisy and Gatsby are
driving home, their car fatally knocks down Myrtle. Tom lies to George that Gatsby is Myrtle’s
lover and he killed her. Nick deduces that Gatsby wasn’t the one driving rather it was Daisy.
George shoots Gatsby by the pool and then kills himself. The media tannish Gatsby’s name,
saying h...
