Introduction
Bank Dhofar has been listed as one of the fastest growing banks in the Middle East
mostly in the sulnate of Oman. The bank boasts of an extensive market under its numerous
branches, specifically 58 of them and more than 100 Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) in this
region. The bank also offers other services such as professional and corporate banking, customer
banking, SMS banking and mobile banking among others. This move has kept the bank in the
top spot in the rendering of financial services in this region.

Description of problem
Despite the huge milestone that Bank Dhofar has made in the financial sector, it faces a
major challenge that if not taken care of at an early stage, it would ruin the company’s
operations. This problem is that the bank does not have a concise reward and performance
management program that it would use to motivate its staff despite the commitment and hard
work that they have rendered to the company. This has been clearly demonstrated by the frequent
demonstration by these workers as well as their laxity in the company when rendering financial
services to their customers. In order to prevent such an occasion, the bank should use and
Integrated Management System (IMS) under the reward and performance program in order to
identify the necessities that should be considered in this case. This integrated system would
apply some of the reward, performance and motivation theories suggested by great scholars as
well as tools and techniques to be used concurrently with these theories.

Theories
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
This theory was proposed by Abraham Maslow in his work “A Theory of Human
Motivation” in the Psychological review. He suggests that in order to issue motivation to staff or
workers in any environment, the managers must consider solving the basic needs that a human
being needs before settling to the secondary ones. He proposes that the mangers use a pyramid
hierarchy bottom starting from psychological, safety, love/belonging, esteem, and selfactualization respectively.
Theory X and Theory Y
This theory was proposed by Douglas McGregor in his work “The Human Side
Enterprise” and seeks to guide managers by using two main ways: theory X which proposes that
if the staff is lowly motivated they should use an authoritarian style and if they are having
challenges the managers should use theory X which proposes a participative style.
Two-factor theory of motivation
This theory was proposed by Fredrick Herzberg suggested that for the managers to create
a motivating environment they must first identify those factors that demotivate their staff as well
as those that motivate them. They should first solve these demotivating factors and then after
completion, proceed to integrate the motivation factors.
David McClelland’s theory of needs
This theory proposes that the managers, in this case, should first identify the different
motivators in the staff and divide them into three categories: achievement, affiliation, and power.

4

Each category has its own factors that motivate them and the mangers should keenly consider
incorporating these factors into the performance and reward program.

Tools and techniques
Beside the theories stated, there are several tools and techniques that when integrated
with these theories will lead to a highly motivated staff. These are the provision of a positive
working environment, stetting of organizational goals and encouraging the staff to set personal
ones that relate to the organizational goals, providing incentives, recognition of achievements,
the creation of a profit sharing program, soliciting employee input and provision of a platform
for professional development.
