How do I know when to use the Imperfect Subjunctive in Spanish?

I know how to conjugate but knowing the situations in which it is used is proving to be a little difficult to grasp for me.

You use the imperfect subjunctive when you are uncertain of something happening IN THE PAST.

For example, if you wanted to say:

My father doubted that we ate the whole pizza,  you would say:

Mi padre dudaba que nosotros comiƩramos toda la pizza.

Or, if wanted to say, They wished that his brother would open the door:

Ellos deseaban que su hermano abriera la puerta.

In both cases, you can see there was UNCERTAINLY whether or not something in the past would happen.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more help. Thanks.
