You would have to get a common denominator for the two. Which would be 8. So the cinnamon is is 1 and 3/8, so as a mixed number that is 11/8 (1=8/8 +3/8). And the nutmeg is 3/4, so to get 8 in the denominator, you would have to multiply BOTH the top and bottom by 2 (3*2=6), (4*2=8) for 6/8. Then you have to combine your mixed numbers of 11/8 + 6/8, which would be 17/8. Then for part b, you have to simply the numbers, so 8 can go into 17 twice, and you have a remainder of 1, so you answer would be 2 1/8
