Nils-Udo
Nils-Udo is an artist from Bavaria born in1937. The German artist began making
environmental art in the 1960s after shifting from painting in Paris. Nils-Udo started his work
with nature after moving back to Bavaria, whereby he planted creations and placed them in
hands of nature to blossom and disappear with time. He is involved in the land and
environmental art. Nils-Udo is recognized for celebrating nature’s beauty with found
materials, including branches and leaves to make site-specific and stunning artworks such as
OVO (Fearing, n.p). Nils-Udo’s work also involves arranging delicately scattered petals on
ponds’ surfaces, unique nests formed from leaves, twigs, wildflowers, and leaves, creating
surreal sights.
Nils-Udo’s artist statement resonated with me in various ways; “by installing plantings
or integrating them into more complex installations, the work is implanted into nature. As a
part of nature, the work lives and passes away in the rhythm of the seasons” (Taggart, n.p).
