    4. Describe the issue of isolation in Statesville presented in this video and the effects connections and contact with outside visitors can have on the prisoners’ mental status.
    5. Identify at least two (2) issues that gay inmates here uniquely face. Identify at least one (1) method of protecting gay inmates against each of these identified issues.
    6. Take a position on how you believe conditions at Statefield could be improved. Include at least two (2) specific actions that could be taken to improve conditions (i.e. security and safety, abuse and use of force, isolation, poor food quality, etc.). Provide a rationale for your position.

There are many methods that Sergent Baldwin and the team of officers use to
maintain order at the prison, and they keep the prison under lock down for most of the time
with only a short periodic time of exercising and getting fresh air. They also maintain armed
officers in various towers to help break out fights between the inmates and protect the
officers that may be forced to come in to restore order. The use of guns to warn and scare the
prisoners and protect the fellow officers from being attacked. They also use a holding cell as
a temporary location for subduing the inmates who get out of control. From time to time they
are also forced to use overwhelming force to caution other inmates against committing any
offense. All visitors undergo a thorough search before being allowed into the facility to avoid
any infiltration of contrabands.
The methods are effective in warding off attacks but also pose a significant risk to the
officers and the prisoners. Extended periods of lock down affect the prisoners and makes
them hostile, and they are denied the fundamental opportunity for socializing. It is unethical
