McDonaldization of Society
The term McDonaldization of society is a term that was coined by George Ritzer who
used it to refer to the way several elements within the society have similarities with those of a
fast food chain (Ding 23). The society has been undergoing a lot of changes in the recent
past, people and businesses seek to come up with new ways of doing things. Traditional rules
that were being used to do things are now being replaced with more modern ones. Tasks are
now being broken down into smaller ones which are then handled using the most efficient
method. Any other methods that are not efficient enough will be rejected.
McDonaldization of society has characteristics like efficiency, calculability,
predictability and control which are found in businesses that deal with fast foods. The fast
food industry uses methods that are designed to produce outcomes that are desired every
other time they are used. The end result when these methods are used can be predicted easily
since there is the control of the processes used and performance can be measured easily based
on quantity (Ding, Ying, et al. 19). There have been a lot of changes taking place in various
sports which have been brought about by McDonaldization. Major sports like football and
basketball among others are not the way they used to be. It has become very necessary for
the owners of the clubs to come up with ways of ensuring that their fan base is secure. My
favorite sport is football which has undergone numerous changes to the way the seasons,
games and players are organized.
