Definition: The process of continuous degradation of dry-lands due to climatic changes or human activities causing the lands to become even more arid, losing their fertility.vegetation and wildlife is called desertification.
The process happens mainly in dry land ecosystems. In dry systems, the land is devoid of water and nutrients, thus limiting the ability of land to sustain crops, produce wood or other kinds of agriculture. Thus they are more susceptible to changes in climatic changes and human activity.
One of the examples leading to desertification is inappropriate use of a piece of land by humans. Humans depend on lands for agriculture, food, wood and farming. Due to increased demands of humans, continuous use of a particular piece of land for prolonged duration leads to the land losing its nutrients and water content, thus its ability to further provide these to humans. This turns the dry-land into an infertile, desert ecosystem incapable of sustaining production of livestock.
Desertification affects livelihood of millions of people who are dependent on the lands for their day to day food or living.Around 10-20%. IT causes massive losses of income to people dependent on land to earn their living. It may also cause other effects as turning of a land into a desert may cause storms that may lead to various deseases. It may also lead to people migrating to other cities that will in turn cause imbalalance between population distrubutions.
