Fordham University Microbiology Worksheet
Question 1:Write a minimum 300 word essay on the various steps of cellular respiration in microbes. In your essay include information on catabolism, anabolism, reaction of cellular respiration, location where the steps are happening, how much ATP and NADH are generated in each step, what is the starting and end product of each step and which reactions are redox and why. Question 2:Each year across the world, manufacturers produce more than 300 million tons of paper ,mostly in the United States where over 50 million trees each year are turned into paper. If the enormous amount of chemical energy contained in the chemical bonds of cellulose in waste paper could be converted into biofuels, we could simultaneously relieve a major burden on landfills and provide a large new source for the energy industry. The pulp papermaking process began in China during the early 2nd century AD, and paper allowed the information revolution of printing and books, which dramatically advanced the knowledge base of civilization. Pulp is a suspension of cellulose fibers from wood or other plantsources in water that, when pressed and dried, makes paper. In plants, cellulose is mixed with another polymer, lignin, which strengthens the cellulose. Modern paper manufacturers remove lignin, because lignin causes paper to turn yellow over time. For the purpose of making biofuels, paper is a better carbon source than raw wood or other plant material because paper is almost pure cellulose, whereas, trees and other plants contain many different compounds. There are a number of microorganisms, including fungi, bacteria, and protozoa, that naturally degrade cellulose, which is not surprising, given that it may be the most abundant polymer at Earth, at an estimated 700 billion tons! That represents a large amount of stored energy.Based on your knowledge of Chapter 6, what kind of microbe will be ideal to metabolise the cellulose in paper. (Hint: In terms of nutrition requirements and oxygen requirements)Through research, look up which microbe can be used in order to effectively degrade cellulose and convert it to biofuel. Why did you choose this microbe? Explain.Write a possible metabolic reaction that the microbe may use in order to degrade the cellulose. Label all substrates and products. What could be different about the environmental impact of a genetically engineered bacterium containing many different cellulases (enzymes that degrade cellulose) and related enzymes, as contrasted with natural communities of microorganisms that degrade cellulose?Question 3:Through research and reading Chapter 6, pick a disease that involves formation of biofilms in order to establish an infection. Discuss in terms of biofilms, what are the different steps the microbe performs in order to colonise the tissue. How is it advantageous for the microbe? How is it disadvantageous for the host? What are the implications in terms of antibiotic action on biofilms?Question 4:Read this article on the story of antiseptic discovery by Joseph Lister Joseph ListerDescribe your views on what methods of antimicrobial treatments helped to curtail the spread of infectious diseases during the time of Joseph Lister. Emphasize which of these methods is bactericidal, bacteriostatic, antiseptic, disinfecting and sanitizing. We are now faced with a similar problem. In late 2019, a new viral disease emerged from China, COVID-19. Due to thousands of people getting infected and hospitalized, hospitals are running short of gloves, masks and ventilators. Describe how this might impact the spread of infectious disease like COVID-19 and how can this be solved. All your answers should be detailed and written in your own words. It will be graded on the quality of your essays. A minimum of 3 citations are required for your written assignment. Scientific journals should be cited in APA format.

Blood Pressure Lab Report
Blood Pressure Lab Write-up: Produce a lab report for the body position activity of the Blood Pressure lab. Your report should be in non-numeric, paragraph form. The data you need for the report is found in an Excel file posted on Canvas. The data includes the subject's reported sex and age (decade, not specific year) as well as collected heart rates and data for sitting (resting) and recumbent blood pressure.1. Write an Introduction Section (3 or 4 paragraphs). A brief overview of blood pressure should be included in this section. Don’t forget to include a citation when you provide information that is not common knowledge. For example, your text (Silverthorn, 2019), lab manual (Caldwell, Didomenico, Shearer, & Botten, 2019), or another reasonable source. Make sure to include brief explanations of the physiology underlying the measurement of blood pressure and how to interpret the blood pressure reading. State the hypotheses or predictions. 2. Methods. Write 2-3 paragraphs that give an overview of how you did your experiment. Cite our lab manual (Caldwell, Didomenico, Shearer, & Botten, 2019), and then concisely summarize how the data was collected. Write a paragraph describing your test subjects. How are they similar and how are they different?Write 1-2 paragraphs that give a general overview of how you used the methods and baseline data to study the effects of changes in body position on blood pressure and heart rate. What is the independent variable of this experiment? The dependent variable? How are you analyzing the data (mean, standard deviation, confidence interval)?3. Results. Include at least one graph and a summary table or graph. You may need more than one. Any table or graph should have a descriptive title. Make sure you submit a summary table, not a restatement of raw data. I smile when I see calculated measures of central tendency (mean and median) and some measure of spread. Excel can do most of those calculations for you. Your graph should show class averages of the blood pressure component in your hypothesis for each body position. You should include a short narrative highlighting your data in this section. 4. Summary (4-5 paragraphs) Explain your data by using the information you introduced in your introduction. Make sure to demonstrate you understand the underlying physiology explaining why blood pressure changes in response to changes in body position. Refer to your table and graph and point out any important data. If your results did not match your expected results, write a paragraph suggesting one reason your results might have been different from the expected results. Number's 1 and 2 are done and will be sent to assigned tutor.

Excelsior College Autosomal DNA Genetic Relatives Project
Assume that Mary and Susan share a single segment of DNA. That segment of DNA is located on chromosome 5, and is 6.59 cMs long. Based on your understanding of the matching thresholds at the three testing companies, at which company will Mary and Susan not be identified as genetic relatives? Based on the table entitled “Average autosomal DNA shared by pairs of relatives, in percentages and centiMorgans” on the ISOGG Autosomal DNA Statistics (Links to an external site.)website, what is Mary and Susan’s possible relationship? For the remaining questions, assume Mary and Susan also share two other segments of DNA: (1) a segment of 51 cMs on chromosome 12; and (2) a segment of 19 cMs on chromosome 14. If Mary and Susan share these three segments of DNA, what is their likely possible relationship based on the same table on the ISOGG Autosomal DNA Statistics (Links to an external site.)website Now look at the Shared cM Project (Links to an external site.)results, which uses actual data. What could the relationship between Mary and Susan be, based on the data from the Shared cM ProjectThe 3 companies are 23andme, Ancestry DNA and Fsmily tree dna
