Allison Schmitendorf English 101 Essay 1: Storytelling through Narrative Our theme for the semester is storytelling. For our first essay, I want you to begin with the most personal story to you: your own. For this assignment, I'd like for you to think about a moment in time when your perspective about something suddenly shifted. The event this shift happens does not necessarily have to be during a major milestone (although it can be). In fact, often these moments end up happening in the most mundane of settings, so the setting of your narrative can be as seemingly insignificant fro the exterior as you wish-standing in line at Starbucks, driving down the road, etc. What cannot be insignificant about this moment, however, is how it changed you, whether in terms of how you view yourself or the way in which you see the world around you. The best narrative papers allow the reader to experience the event and realization that is occurring. The most effective means of accomplishing this is by showing as opposed to telling. Paint the scene for your reader through the use of your five senses. In each moment, consider how things appear, sound, smell, taste, and feel. Consider these feelings in the abstract as well. You can taste the greasy cheese dripping on a pizza, but can you also taste the bitterness in someone's voice? Be creative. Due to the nature of this assignment, you are allowed to narrate your paper from the first person perspective. However, keep in mind that while a narrative takes the form of a story, you are still ultimately writing an essay, and you need to have a clear, identifiable thesis statement. Please see me if you have any questions. Requirements: MLA format 12-point, Times New Roman Font 3-4 pages M м Three copies of completed rough draft due for peer review: Final draft due: W9/13

Storytelling through narrative
America is has been described in many quarters as the melting point of world cultures.
Nearly all groups in the world have a place in the American socio-cultural system. While the
diversity in the country is a good thing and should be a unifying factor, the fact is that the
cultural differences have been a major setback to the progress of the country. In the 21st century,
America remains one of the most ethnically polarized nations in the world. While the
weaknesses have not led to massive confrontations that cause an existential threat to the country,
I dare say that the problem is a time bomb. In almost all segments of the social extract, there are
problems related to ethnic intolerance, and it is important to make the society conscious of the
racial problems in the country.
In food cottages, social halls and schools, there are traces of racial intolerance which has
the potential of destroying the beautiful country in the event caution is not taken to curb the
situation. So sad is the situation that young children in Kindergarten have learned to show racial
hatred. That begs the question, what role do parents play in helping to shape a society that is not
divided on racial grounds? In this story, it is exhibited that parents play a critical role in helping
