The American title company yearly sale summarizes as 2Y+4x^2=6x+5, what is X,Y intercept, also graph the line?

Re-write equation in standard form:

y = -2x^2 + 3x + 5/2

The x intercepts are the zeroes, so

-2x^2 + 3x + 5/2 = 0

2x^2 - 3x - 5/2 = 0

Use quadratic formula to solve:

x = 2.096

x = -0.596

The y intercept is:

y = -2(0)^2 + 3(0) + 5/2

y = 2.5

Here's the graph:

Can you show me how you solved it with the quadratic formula?

Mar 21st, 2015

So my x would be 2.096? right?

Mar 21st, 2015

sure, the quadratic formula is

[-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a

in this case a = 2, b = -3, and c = -2.5

just plug in those values and you'll get the number I got.
