Risk management

Issues of lateness amongst healthcare practitioners are common in the workplace.
However, these issues might arise as a result of various causes, some of which are avoidable
while others are not. Similar to Mike’s case as described in the critical decision-making
scenario, issues such as accidents are beyond one’s control, which means that at times
lateness can be avoided. One may also be late to work as a result of other unprecedented
factors such as illness or other urgent needs. At the same time, they may occur as a result of
distractions that might occur within the workplace. In Mike’s case, for example, he faces a
dilemma on whether to first address a spill on the floor while at the same time knowing that
this could lead to late reporting in his designated duties. Similarly, such cases may occur in
the healthcare where a practitioner on their way to the designated section comes across
misplaced items, say needles and drugs.

As described in the above case in the healthcare facility, whether one chooses to first
address the current issue or waits for someone else to do it while going ahead to report to their
designated sections has its ramifications on both the individual and the facility. On one way,
the practitioner could choose to first have the items collected. However, this could lead to
lateness in their duties and, owing to the critical nature of healthcare, there might be
complexities threatening the well-being of the patients that one serves as well as the
performance of the departments. On the other hand, the practitioner could leave the needles
and drugs lying in their place and proceed to their duties, which could pose a threat to those
within the facility and particularly if children or patients have access to the area. As noted by
Lee, Beanland, Goeman, Johnson … Elliott (2015), the purpose such complexities and
ramifications that may arise as a result of negligence or poor coordination in the healthcare

facility are the reasons that these facilities have a clear demarcation of duties. In my case,
however, I would first address the present need by moving the needles and drugs to a safe
place and then proceeding to my area of work. If this might lead to confrontation by my
superiors, I would then proceed to explain the scenario. After all, it is the duty of practitioners
to offer holistic services and address all the needs within the health including those meant to
improve the health of the patients as well as those that might pose a threat. Further, the facility
should be risk-free.
