one third of the fish in Liam's tank were added today. Half of the other fish were a gift to Liam last week. The other nine come from Liam's old tank. How many fish are in the tank. What is the difference between the number of fish Liam had in his old tank and the number he has now?

Oct 16th, 2017

1/3 of fish Liam has now were added today;

half of the other fish = (1/2)*(1 - 1/3) = (1/2)/(2/3) = 1/3 of all fish were a gift to Liam

the other nine make 1 - 1/3 - 1/3 = 1/3 of  fish Liam has now. So, now Liam has 9*3 = 27 fish.

The difference is 27 - 9 = 18.
