Question 1.
A hazard is something that might cause harm. Some examples of hazards include the
different types of chemical hazards since most chemicals are toxic, carcinogenic or corrosive, an
electrical hazard like a not completely isolated high voltage apparatus or a biological hazard like
a dangerous virus such as the influenza A virus.
A danger is something that represents a risk but can easily be avoided through caution.
Examples of danger include a fire since it represents the risk of being burned but such risk can be
avoided by getting away from the flames or using specially designed suits, a wet floor since it
poses the risk of falling down but this can be avoided by waiting until it dries, and a pungent
object like a needle, since it represents the risk of being injured, but it can be avoided by storing
and disposing of needles appropriately.
Finally, a risk is the probability that either a hazard or a danger causes harm. In this
regard, using the previous examples, examples of risks would be being intoxicated, getting ill, or
getting burned.
Question 2.
According to the fundamental ergonomics model, the designed hand tool should be of
light weight so that the person can use it with only one hand, and have the adequate dimensions
to be hold safely and comfortably. Taking this into account, the hand tool designed would need
to:
•
Weigh less than 2.2 kg, so that it can be carried out without risking muscle fatigue
•
Have its center of gravity aligned with the second and/or third fingers so that it can be
hold in a natural-like posture

3
Have handles to which the hand can attach firmly while using the tool
The following image represents the design for an ergonomic screwdriver. As can be observed, all
the above criteria are followed.
Question 3.
1. Is its weight comfortable for prolonged use without unnecessary muscle fatigue? As has
been stated in the previo...
