With the increase in emergency cases in the contemporary society, it has become
important for public health to be prepared to deal with these emergencies when they occur. The
increase in the rate of the number of emergencies in today’s society has been associated with the
type of lifestyle people are living as well as the impact of the new technology. Public health
preparedness involves preventing, protecting, responding and recovering from health
emergencies. This is enhanced by working together with both public health, communities and
health care systems as well as individuals. This study, therefore, seeks to explore the concept
public health preparedness in different contexts.
Essential Public Health Services Procedures
One of the essential public health services is monitoring health status. This helps in
identifying health problems within a community. The service is done through such processes as
identifying threats to health, evaluation of health service needs, the collection of data and
publicizing it in areas where it is easily accessible and giving more attention to groups which are
at a higher risk. During times of emergency, the procedure as mentioned above which is carried
out to monitor the health status of communities will be jeopardized. This will further impact a
hospital negatively (Donaldson, & Donaldson, 2003). For example, when an emergency occurs,
there will be no enough time to carry out evaluation and assessment of the health status of a
patient. This is dangerous as health status assessments play an important role in examining the
patient’s health history which is then used to come up with a plan to address the need of the
patients as well as treatment. However, emergencies can lead to patients being treated without
proper diagnosis of the illness. This means that the medication that the patients will receive may
affect their health due to inadequate assessment as the health professionals undertake their roles
fast due to lack of time and the need to attend to all patients with immediate effect to save their

lives. This, in turn, affects the hospital in that it will not be able to provide quality health
services.
