Informative Speech on OSHA
Organizations and employers report over three million serious injuries sustained by
employees every year, but this is an underestimation. Research shows that employers do not
report most work-related injuries sustained by employees. Therefore, the number of employees
who sustain work-related injuries annually is likely to be much higher than employers report in
their OSHA log. Before diving into details of work safety, who is this “guy”, we call OSHA?
OSHA stands for Occupational Safety and Health Administration, an organization created by
Congress to ensure employers provide workers with good working conditions by setting and
enforcing work and safety standards.
Also, OSHA provides education, training, outreach, and assistance to workers by creating
awareness of occupational health and safety. Do you think people are aware of OSHA? How
many of you know OSHA and the work health and safety standards that the organization
enforces for your benefit as workers? OSHA is one of the firms that serve under the United
States Department of Labor. Its administrator answers directly to the Labor Secretary, a cabinet
member in the office of the United States President. OSHA covers. OSHA covers employers and
employees in the private and public sector in the 50 states of the United States and jurisdiction
and territories covered by the federal authority.
According to OSHA reports, over 4,500 workers die due to work-related injuries every
year. Why do we accept that there are millions of workers sustaining work-related injuries
annually? The National Safety Council estimates the cost of workplace fatalities and injuries on
the US economy to be $198.2 billion annually. Although this is a huge toll on the United States,
it is somehow acceptable because workers are the victims. Besides, have you ever wondered why
there are no instances of corporate executives being fired because an employee died while on the

job. When an employee dies, the police come, investigate the cause of death, and declare it was
an accident, meaning it wasn’t an intentional or suicidal act.
Also, the police provide a claim that the cause of death was “random and unpreventable.”
The truth is that the causes of work-related injuries and deaths are predictable and preventable.
OSHA provides minimum occupational health and safety standards, meaning compliance with
these standards is not enough. Organizations and employers must go beyond what the law
requires to protect workers effectively. In other words, OSHA does not have specific standards
for every workplace hazard. For instance, OSHA provides no standard for killer whales, although
working with killer whales can be very dangerous.
The impact of work work-related injuries and deaths is increased income inequality.
Besides, work-related illnesses and injuries can force workers in the middle class into the lower
class or crush the hope of lower lass workers of advancing to the middle class. As such,
businesses and employers must properly manage the job conditions that increase the risk of an
employee sustaining work-related illnesses and injuries to contribute to solving the social
problem of income inequality. They should create comprehensive illness and injury prevention
programs and commit to managing them beyond and above the minimum standards set by OSHA
to enhance the safety and health of an employee while at work. It is your responsibility as
employees to report any negligence by employers on the issue of workplace health and safety to
support OSHA in performing its core mandate. Thank you!

Informative Speech on Fire and Safety
Imagine the organization where you work catching fire, and people start moving in panic.
What is the first thing you would do to ensure people evacuate the room in the right way without
congesting the doors and windows? Every year thousands of people die from fire accidents not
because the accidents are initially fatal but because no necessary measures are taken to evacuate
people in the right direction in fire disasters. I am here to share my experience as a disaster
professional and create fire safety awareness that may save your life and that of people around
you. Besides, there is a fire safety precautions that you should take regardless of the organization
you work in or where you live. The following fire safety issues can assist you in creating a more
secure and safer environment for you and your colleagues in the face of a fire disaster:
Escape Plans
Since fire is a disaster that may occur in any organization or building, you should have a
clear escape plan in case a fire accident occurs. Fire accidents require quick escape; you need an
escape plan to help you evacuate a building on fire within a few minutes. Besides, your safety in
the face of a fire disaster depends on how the planned escape routes are effective and the
quickness of smoke alarms in providing fire warning. When creating a fire escape plan, you
should consider the basics of an escape plan.
The escape routes should include two routes out of every room; you should designate a
fire assembly outside every big building, ensure that the installed fire alarms are effective in
detecting smoke and providing quick warning, and ensure the door in the escape route near you
can be opened without a key from inside for escape plans to be effective. Also, ensure that you
know disabled colleagues who may require help to evacuate in a fire disaster. After assembling

in the fire assembly, you should conduct a roll call to ensure everybody has evacuated the
building on fire.
Also, make sure to remain outside until the fire department provides a notice on the
safety of the building. If the second route is a window, verify the windowsill is low enough and
ensure that the window and its security bars can be opened from the inside. No window escape
should be available for tall buildings. The fire department should test the plan to ensure it is
effective and prepare people for any fire risk.
Smoke Alarms
The United States experiences thousands of fire incidents every year that cause
approximately 3,000 deaths. Although most deaths result from home fires experienced during the
night, many deaths come from organizational fires. For this reason, smoke alarms in the
organization are one of the most critical steps toward preventing fire-related victims or
casualties. You should ensure that there are at least two fire alarms in your workplace and if
there is no one, request the management to install one. The alarms should be installed on the
ceiling to enhance their detection of smoke.
Ensure smoke alarms in your workplace are not installed on the corners of the room, and
ensure they are not installed near ceiling fans and air-conditioning vents for effective
functioning. Other fire safety precautions you should take include: for those who smoke, do not
smoke at work buildings to avoid putting your colleagues at risk and monitor candle and incense
flames during general annual celebrations as they are open fires and disastrous. Thank you!
